The India Enterprise Council is a non-profit, non-partisan institution committed to the promoting entrepreneurship, individual rights, and innovation in India.
Through articles, policy briefs and research papers, IEC aims to contribute to the public debate on India’s socio-economic development. By holding seminars and conferences, IEC convenes investors, entrepreneurs, academicians, policymakers, business leaders and other key stakeholders concerned with public policy issues.
As the India growth story accelerates, IEC seeks to influence public opinion and bring to the fore the most effective development models and policy ideas that would expand enterprise in India, such that the long-term nation-building project of the enterprise of India proceeds on strong foundations.
In pursuit of its mission, the India Enterprise Council champions the ideals of individual rights and economic freedom. Consistent with empirical evidence, IEC believes that to achieve sustained and equitable economic development, individual entrepreneurs and private capital should be allowed maximum freedom with government acting as a facilitator and common-sense regulator of markets, not as a direct participant in the economy. The system of capitalism, based on competition and co-operation, requires a strong but limited State with sufficient capacity to enforce contracts and protect property – a State working within constitutional bounds and focusing on tightly defined activity areas.
This entails, for example, privatization and not just disinvestment of state-owned companies because government has no business to do business, greater labour market flexibility with companies having the ability to hire and fire without political interference, proper mechanisms to monetise public assets and resources, information transparency by default from public bodies, digital governance, competitive fiscal federalism and finally, disentangling state subsidies for education and public health from the state’s provision of the same so as to promote choice and decentralized customisation according to the unique needs of India’s billion-plus citizens.
